Bay
Of Biscay
As the home area for BDRP you can check the website for details
of species and sightings. The P&O cruise ferry the Pride
of Bilbao offers a regular and cost effective means of travelling
through a variety of cetacean habitats from the English coast.
Well
over 20 cetacean species have been recorded in the bay with new
records still being added in recent years. Numbers can be well into
the thousands for dolphins and over 130 Fin Whale have been recorded
on a single trip in late summer. It is clear that the bay is important
not just for cetaceans but also for birds as good numbers of many
species are recorded each year.
BDRP is keen to help visitors understand this fascinating region
and we have several initiatives to help make the bay more accessible
to all and to see the diversity and numbers of animals present in
the bay. See available trips.

Maldives
For many people the exquisite islands and coral reefs of the Maldives
require little introduction. But it is not widely known that the
Maldives also possess a particularly rich whale and dolphin fauna.
Especially exciting is the great diversity of species found here.
In the last year an astonishing 18 different species were seen.
Spinner
Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin and
Short-finned Pilot Whale are all common. Spotted
Dolphin, Striped Dolphin and Dwarf Sperm Whale
are all regulars. Recent highlights have included superb
views of Sperm Whale, Blue Whale and Bryde’s
Whale, and also Beaked Whale including
Cuvier’s, Blainville’s/Dense-beaked and
Longman’s/Tropical. This last was long considered
the rarest whale in the world, but is now know to occur regularly
around the Maldives.
Each trip has a different focus from Blue Whale to
Manta Ray as well as a fantastic diversity of resident
and migrating cetaceans. The itineraries are flexible to make the
most of sightings and overnight stops in sheltered lagoons should
allow time for a snorkel or to visit the beautiful islands along
the way.
