Bottlenose Dolphin Sightings Lyme Bay (16.07.2011)

It's been a busy week for sightings of Bottlenose Dolphins in Lyme Bay, with sightings from Ian Cornwell, skipper of the Huntress II and also from the headlands around West Bay by our supporters at the Hive Beach Cafe and later during a fishing trip by Liz and Ian Simpson from the White House Hotel in West Bay.

The group appears to contain 20 - 30 animals, some with distinctive dorsal fins and also some calves. Ian Cornwell was able to take numerous dorsal fin photographs which will be added to the MARINElife photo-identification catalogue, either as new animals or re-sightings of previously encountered animals.

A video of the encounter taken by Liz and Ian Simpson has been uploaded to our Charm III Project blog and can be viewed by clicking here and shows how acrobatic these large dolphins can be.

Today also marks the start of the MARINElife guided Naturetrek wildlife trips into Lyme Bay which give us the opportunity to conduct a survey for cetaceans and seabirds and hopefully encounter these Bottlenose Dolphins again.
