News Flash: Influx of Herring results in spate of dolphin sightings (30 March 2011)

Dolphin sightings in Lyme Bay off Dorset and Devon have increased noticeably this month. Fishermen working with MARINElife as part of the CHARM project have reported Bottlenose, Short-beaked Common and White-beaked Dolphins, coinciding with a notable influx of Herring. The Channel areas south of Dartmouth, West Bay and Portland have all recorded dolphin sightings during March.

Approximately 50 Short-beaked Common Dolphins were reported 36 miles south of Dartmouth (©Mike Bailey/MARINElife)On 25 March, approximately 50 Common Dolphins were observed by Ian Noble SSE of Dartmouth and on 27 March, a small pod of Bottlenose Dolphin were seen by Dave Sales just 2 miles south of West Bay. Dave has also reported regular sightings of Bottlenose Dolphin south of Portland Bill associated with an influx of Herring into the area.
