Lyme Bay White-beaked Dolphin Survey

MARINElife surveyors Dr Rachel Davies, Rick Morris, Peter Howlett, Fiona McNie and Glynis Northwood-Long, together with a film crew, headed out into Lyme Bay for a targeted White-beaked Dolphin small boat survey from Brixham Harbour aboard 'Spot On' Skippered by Ross Parham.

We left the Harbour around 09:00 and started surveying shortly after. It was an overcast day with light winds giving us a near flat calm sea for most of the day, so our hopes were high on seeing cetaceans. We followed a set of transect lines put together by our Conservation Science Manager, Dr Rachel Davies with the aim of locating and photographing the dorsal fins of White-beaked Dolphin to add to our photo ID catalogue.

Sadly, on this survey, we were unsuccessful in locating our target species, but we did have a good encounter with a small group of Common Dolphin in the morning and again with probably the same group on our return. A number of Harbour Porpoise were also recorded along with a variety of seabirds.

Addition filming also occurred on our Guernsey trip, the report for which can be read here.

Although we cannot disclose what the filming was for, the crew were great to work with, and got to record how we conduct these small boat surveys. So keep your eyes peeled, and we will inform our supporters as soon as the press release is sent out.
