We left Ilfracombe harbour in glorious sunshine, a nice smooth sea and light winds from the southwest. I took up a position on a nice busy boat on the top deck, several people came and asked questions about what they were likely to see as we made the crossing.
The first sighting was a single adult Grey Seal as we passed Bull point, just vertical in the water as we passed. Quite a few passengers got nice pictures from about 25 metres away.
Around halfway to Lundy we saw a small flock of Herring Gulls on the water and circling above, I can only assume that there was a shoal of possibly mackerel below.
As we neared the landing on Lundy, there was a juvenile Grey Seal basking on the rocks and a further two adult Grey Seals showing hunting behaviour very close by.
Over lunch, we sat on the cliffs near the south lighthouse where we saw Herring Gulls, Manx Shearwater and a Peregrine Falcon playing in the breeze.
On return to the boat, we saw Grey Seals on the rocks and in the water, Oystercatchers and conflict between Manx Shearwaters and Herring Gulls.
One passenger on the boat had seen a single, lost, young Puffin on the island which was confirmed by the staff in the shop.
The return back to Ilfracombe was quiet.
As ever, huge thanks to the crew of the Oldenburg for their help and assistance.
